boat horror game

This was a project I worked on for a small team, development is currently on pause. Everything shown on this page including the level design, water, door opening, and boat mesh was made by me, though the game design was made by the team.

programs used:

Simplified game loop

Level design

The main goal in design for this boat was to make getting from core use areas interesting and have opportunity for suspense, but not be tedious.

To do this I implemented a snaking path that makes the player go around a few corners or open a few doors before they can get where they need.

horror design

I utilized adding exterior and dark/windowless sections throughout the core path to break up the player's sense of  comfort while moving through the ship.

Exterior sections not only visually feel more open to danger, but also add abrasive sound changes that makes the player feel the intensity of the storm between doing their tasks.

Greybox made with Unreal cubes and 2nd pass made in maya

Greybox walkthrough

Unmute if possible!

This is a walkthrough of a roughly modeled greybox I made for the level. This was made to ensure doorways, spacing, and game feel were right before moving into the art phase.

I also edited in the sound changes to demonstrate to the team the effect I was going for.

ocean textures

I made these textures in substance designer and brought them into Unreal Engine to make the Ocean Material. The maps work together to fake depth through color and height, and match up seafoam to the caps of the height waves. Since it doesn't require transparency, it's quite cheap for a detailed water material.
