Pirate tavern

This tavern built into the side of a shipwreck was made in March 2024 and was one of my first full environment projects.

I imagine this is a rather disheveled establishment where fights break out often, and I had a lot of fun communicating that through the environment.

programs used:

Hero Prop: anchor

Baked and textured in Substance Painter, using hand painted height maps for the engravings.

modular kit

Utilizes plain seamless textures that repeat across tiles. Vertex painting and Decals in the scene add unique variation not tied to the base mesh.

modular props

All of these props were used numerous times in different ways to fill out the environment.

As so much of this environment is wood based, after texturing I set up some tints in-engine so I could make sure everything had enough separation.

supporting foliage

This Loulu Palm was made to populate the exterior scene that can be seen through the tavern windows and balcony.

Hand painted textures made in Photoshop.

intial concept sketch

After gathering references of recreated historic ships and taverns, I made this quick plan for the environment. Since I had a limited time to complete this, I chose this environment to maximize a modular approach. Taverns have many repeating architectural and prop elements, making a very limited modular kit still look natural!
