viking cabin

My focus on this small exterior scene was material creation and texturing. All materials on the cabin were made from scratch in Substance Designer and detailed extensively in Substance Painter.

Growth

I actually decided I wanted to make the textures extremely detailed and all unique to get the full extent of this practice. This resulted in way too many UV sheets and materials for this one cabin, making it not only inefficient processing wise, but also to texture. I’m glad I was crazy enough to try it that way though, because through the process I noticed all the ways I could’ve overlapped UVs with little loss in any detail. I’ve been very intentional and efficient with how I combine UVs since this project.

Wireframe

I kept most surfaces as low poly as possible while keeping the silhouette, to see how far I could push the textures.

supporting props

Small props that add interest to the cabin itself.
Made using custom Substance Designer materials and Substance Painter for details.

Spruce trees

Made by hand in Maya and Photoshop. Was quick and easy to make a few variations using Maya's "duplicate special" tool on the limb planes.
